Overview

USB‑C battery chargers have become a foundational element of modern power delivery, enabling fast, efficient, and universal charging across a broad range of consumer and portable applications, including smartphones, laptops, tablets, power tools, and emerging high‑power devices. With the widespread adoption of USB Type‑C and the latest USB Power Delivery (PD) standards, charging systems now support bidirectional power flow, dynamic voltage and current negotiation, and significantly higher power levels. The introduction of USB‑C PD 3.0/3.1 with Extended Power Range (EPR) expands output capability up to 240 W and programmable voltages up to 48 V, accelerating charge times while extending USB‑C into new application spaces. At the same time, increasing regulatory focus on efficiency and standby power consumption drives the need for advanced power conversion architectures and higher system integration.

onsemi’s USB‑C Battery Charger Solutions address these requirements with scalable, high‑efficiency architectures covering AC‑input and DC‑input designs from 65 W to 240 W. These solutions integrate key power stages—including power factor correction (PFC), DC‑DC conversion using flyback or LLC topologies, synchronous rectification, and precise PD control with PPS support—to deliver compact, thermally efficient designs. Leveraging wide‑bandgap (WBG) technologies such as GaN and integrated driver GaN (iGaN), along with optimized silicon and SiC devices, enabling higher switching frequencies, increased power density, and improved overall efficiency. Silicon Carbide (SiC) Cascode JFETs
Our high-performance SiC cascode JFETs deliver best-in-class switching speed, lower switching losses, and higher efficiency. They provide high switching frequency and deliver ultra-low on-resistance (RDS (on)) starting at just 5mohm, utilizing less than half the die size of any other technology. Available in both standard thru-hole (including Kelvin) and surface mount packages, they offer excellent cost-effectiveness. These devices utilize a unique cascode configuration, integrating a high-performance SiC fast JFET with a cascode-optimized Si-MOSFET. This innovative approach enables standard gate drive (0-12V) for SiC devices. Given their smaller die size and compatibility with existing driver solutions, the SiC cascode JFETs offer optimized system performance and cost structure.
