QINGDAO, China – Jan. 28, 2005 – China’s largest home appliance manufacturer Haier Group and a leading global supplier of advanced power solutions ON Semiconductor (Nasdaq: ONNN) today announced that they are strengthening their strategic cooperation in semiconductor technology and applications. As part of the partnership, the two companies inaugurated a joint power laboratory at Haier’s Research & Development (R&D) center at Qingdao in Shandong Province, northern China.
The new lab will be Haier’s first devoted specifically to power application solutions. Joint development efforts at the lab will focus on efficient power solutions for Haier’s next-generation products – including air-conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines and LCD television sets.
“Innovation and product quality are the hallmarks of success for both Haier and ON Semiconductor, and this new collaborative lab will synergize our resources and our commitment to jointly develop energy-efficient power supply applications,” said Yu Zida, Haier Group vice president and director of R&D Promotion Division & Information Products Division. “The lab also is part of Haier’s overall strategy to better penetrate the global market. Our vision is to become one of the top three home appliance manufacturers in the world.” Currently, about 30 percent of Haier’s products are exported to international markets.
As home appliances become increasingly sophisticated, offering more new features, there is a matching increase in power consumption. ON Semiconductor’s proven switching power supply solutions will not only enable Haier to optimize power efficiency and minimize standby power consumption in their power supplies, but will also provide a single, standardized ac mains input voltage platform that can be sold into any market worldwide.
"As China and the world embrace energy conservation policies, consumers will pay more attention not only to product-centric functions, but also to power management and energy saving features,” said Bill Bradford, ON Semiconductor senior vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Our power solutions satisfy or exceed increasingly stringent international regulatory standards, and our partnership with the China Certification Center for Energy Conservation Products (CECP) helps drive energy conservation and efficiency in China.”
ON Semiconductor will assign resident field application engineers to work at the joint lab with Haier’s R&D teams across different product lines.
“Our on-site support will enable us to better tailor our power solutions for Haier, to help them build on their time-to-market access with energy-saving home appliances, “said Bradford.
CECP director Li Tienan, in his letter congratulating Haier and ON Semiconductor on the power lab initiative, said the joint lab is a partnership forged by two leading players in their respective industry and will lead to remarkable achievements.
“The Haier-ON lab will be another step contributing to China’s efforts on energy conservation and environmental protection,” said Li. “We look forward to your launch of new products that can best satisfy consumer’s needs in China and abroad as soon as possible.”
Founded in 1984, Haier Group has grown into China’s largest manufacturer of home appliances and a key player in the global market for these products. ON Semiconductor is one of the world’s top 10 suppliers of power management devices – with portfolios of both analog power and integrated power components. ON Semiconductor’s presence in China includes design centers in Hong Kong and Shanghai, and a joint manufacturing venture at Leshan in Sichuan Province, western China.
Haier was incorporated in 1984 only producing household refrigerators. Over the past 20 years, the company has witnessed significant prosperity and is now a transnational organization widely recognized in the world community. Haier currently manufactures a wide range of household electrical appliances, 15,100 varieties of items in 96 product lines, and exports products to more than 160 countries.
