BEIJING, China – May 23, 2006 – ON Semiconductor (NASDAQ: ONNN), a leading global supplier of power management solutions, today announced that it has won two awards for “Best Power Product” from China''s Electronic Design and Application World-Nikkei Electronics China (EDAW-NEC) magazine.
The first award was for “Best Power Management Product”. ON Semiconductor was recognized for two devices in this category, the NCP1337 and the NCP1603. The NCP1337 is an enhanced pulse width modulation (PWM) current-mode controller that eases the design of free running quasi-resonant power supplies for CRT-TVs. The NCP1603 is a combo power factor correction (PFC)/ PWM controller that simplifies design of offline, ac-dc power supplies. This is the third consecutive year that EDAW-NEC has bestowed its “Best Product” recognition to ON Semiconductor for power management devices.
The second award granted ON Semiconductor, was “Best Circuit Protection Product” for its NIS5102 SMART HotPlugTM high side hot swap protection IC with built-in charge pump and accurate temperature sensing circuitry. This is the first time the company has won an award in this category.

NCP1337 – Quasi-Resonant Controller
Compared with other competing products in the industry, the judging panel made up of industry experts noted that the NCP1337 is the best quasi-resonant control IC. “This is a breakthrough to traditional quasi-resonant controller, signifying the future development direction,” the group stated.
The NCP1337 is the enabling device for ON Semiconductor’s GreenPoint™ reference design for CRT-TV power supplies that delivers standby power of less than 1 watt (W). It is an enhanced PWM current-mode controller that eases the design of free running quasi-resonant power supplies such as those found in CRT-TVs. It combines a true current-mode modulator and a demagnetization detector that ensures full borderline/critical conduction mode in any load/line. The device eliminates the need for an external signal, by providing internal transformer core reset detection. Frequency is internally limited to 130 kilohertz (kHz) to facilitate the compliance with EMI conducted emission standards, the lowest limit being 150 kHz.
NCP1603 – PFC/PWM Controller
“The NCP1603 simplifies the task of designing an offline, ac-dc power supply that simultaneously meets governmental requirements for power factor correction and low standby power consumption,” said the judging panel. “Target applications for this device include products such as notebooks, LCD adapters and other consumer electronics.”
The NCP1603 combines a PFC controller chip and a PWM control chip with integrated standby and high voltage start up capabilities in a single, 16-pin SOIC package. The combo controller enables extremely low no-load standby power consumption, making it ideal for notebook and LCD adapters, and other consumer electronics.
Under light load conditions, the NCP1603 PWM controller disables the PFC function, saving in the range of 200 milliwatts (mW) of power. Currently, the most aggressive regulatory standards limit standby power consumption to 500 mW with plans to lower this limit to 300 mW in the future. Given those goals, the power saved by turning off the PFC is significant. Moreover, disabling the PFC ensures that the NCP1603 controller can meet with the 300 mW limit for standby power.
NIS5102 – SMART HotPlug™
The NIS5102 SMART HotPlugTM circuit combines a power MOSFET with control circuitry and thermal protection. This integrated approach simplifies implementation of vital “hot swap” protection in high availability +12 volt (V) systems, cutting design-time of a complete hot swap solution for computing and telecom circuit board applications in half and reducing external component count by 75 percent. The NIS5102 is ideal for use in distributed power systems, servers, disk arrays and powered board insertion applications.
