Wireless-Enabled Audio DSP Module Wins Design Award

Earlier this month, ON Semiconductor’s Ezairo® 7150 SL hybrid module, which includesThe Ezairo 7150 SL hybrid module enables wireless hearing aids the Ezairo 7100audio processor and a Bluetooth Low Energy radio, was chosen as the winning entry in the highly coveted Medical Device Design category of the 2016 ECN IMPACT awards.

Ezairo 7150 SL uses ON Semiconductor's widely-implemented proprietary digital signal processing (DSP) technology and brings wireless connectivity to hearing aids and cochlear implants. The compact hybrid module is based on the powerful Ezairo 7100 open-programmable 24 bit mixed-signal DSP platform. This System in Package (SiP) solution also includes a 2.4 gigahertz (GHz) Bluetooth® Low-Energy (BLE) radio that supports multi-protocol wireless operation. Ezairo 7150 SL integrates EA2M, a low power 2 Mb serial CMOS EEPROM used for storing hearing aid firmware and important parameters.

To simplify and accelerate the development process of an Ezairo 7150 SL-based product, ON Semiconductor has produced a complete reference design of a behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aid. The reference design is comprised of fully-assembled hardware, a sample Android™ application, and firmware to enable advanced wireless features.Using Control over BLE (CoBLE), the sample application allows hearing aid users to control an array of parameters from their smartphone including adjusting the hearing aid volume, making program changes, checking the battery status, and receiving phone alerts (such as incoming calls or text messages). It also features a valuable Find Me; function to help users quickly locate a misplaced hearing aid. The stereo audio streaming proprietary protocol enables music to be streamed from any external audio source (smartphones, tablet computers, televisions, etc.) through a remote dongle. The connectivity range can reach up to 10 meters in good surrounding conditions, while only consuming about 4-5 mA of power.

These advanced wireless features provided through Ezairo 7150 SL will help deliver hearing aids with greater performance and an improved user experience.
