Plug-in hybrid/electric vehicles (xEV) include high voltage battery sub-systems, in addition to the 12 V battery. The 12 V battery must be charged from the HV battery using a DC-DC converter, housed in the vehicle. Since these converters are contained in the vehicle itself, they must be efficient and lightweight. The sizing of these units is dependent upon the vehicle’s 12 V power demands. Vehicles that have a 48 V battery, in addition to the 12 V battery, must have an on-board converter to transfer the 48 V battery charge to the 12 V battery.
