Phoenix, AZ  November 30, 1999  ON Semiconductor today introduced zener and small signal diode series in the space-saving SOD-323 package. The availability of these discrete devices in the SOD-323 package offers designers who already use the same devices in SOT-23 and SOD-123 packages a logical transition to a smaller package outline. The smaller footprint of the SOD-323 package housing these new devices reduces the end-product size and increases portability.

"ON Semiconductor offers an expansive portfolio of technologies in the SOD-323," stated Colette Hunt, vice president and general manager for the discrete products business at ON Semiconductor. "This smaller package is ideally suited for portable products such as cellular phones, PDAs, pagers, cordless phones and TV/TR tuners where high density board design is a necessity."

Providing packages with smaller footprints is critical to the development of smaller end products. Several industry standard zener products previously available in SOT-23 and SOD-123 packages such as the BZX84C, the MMBZ and the MMSZ series are now available in the SOD-323. These zener diodes provide temperature stable references for voltage regulation, for monitoring over and under voltage conditions, and for monitoring logic level rails and battery levels. Covering a voltage range from 2.5 volts to 75 volts, they provide critical protection for vital circuitry and can assist in saving data in power loss situations.

The SOD-323 offers a footprint outline of about 50 mils by 80 mils, and is a popular choice among many small portables developers. It has a power dissipation rating of 200mW and is JEDEC registered. The small signal devices in the space-saving SOD-323 package include Schottky, switching and tuning diodes. ON Semiconductor plans to pursue further development of smaller size packages to accommodate end product designs with limited board space.

Samples and production quantities are currently available. Pricing for the zener diodes is suggested at $0.04 for quantities of 3K. Pricing for the small signal devices averages at approximately $0.12 for quantities of 3K.
