NCP103x devices enable reduce space requirements, lower system cost and streamline the design of 3-6 Watt bias power supplies for isolated dc-dc converters used in IP phones and wireless access point

Applied Power Electronics Conference (APEC), Anaheim, Calif. – Feb. 23, 2004 – In its continuing drive to deliver innovative and efficient power management devices, ON Semiconductor (NASDAQ: ONNN) today introduced the NCP1030 and NCP1031 – miniature, high-voltage, monolithic switching regulators that feature both a power switch and a start-up circuit.

The new NCP103x family of devices simplify the generation of low power and secondary side bias supply voltages that are often required by dc-dc converters and/or 48 Volt (V) telecom systems by mitigating both the space and component-selection issues that have traditionally plagued designers. In addition, the devices are ideal for emerging applications such as 42 V automotive systems and "power over ethernet“ (POE) devices such as IP phones and wireless access points.

Features and Benefits
The NCP1030 and NCP1031 are integrated solutions that combine a PWM controller, an efficient high-voltage start-up circuit, a high-voltage power switch, and house-keeping and protection functions into a space-saving SO8 or Micro8 package. Because the devices reduce external component count, system costs, assembly time and board space are all significanty minimized.

An optimized gate drive for the internal power switch reduces Electromagnetic Interference (EMI). The on-chip start-up regulator further reduces external component count and can be disabled to reduce power consumption. An internal current limit with adaptive Leading Edge Blanking (LEB) eliminates the need for external sensing components. Individual line under and overvoltage (UV/OV) detectors ease transformer design. An internal error amplifier is configurable for either isolated or non-isolated applications. Programmable operating frequency up to 1 megahertz (MHz) allows for the reduction of the size of magnetic components. External frequency synchronization facilitates system integration.

“The introduction of the NCP103x family of devices renders discrete power supply designs for 48 volt telecom applications virtually obsolete,“ said Jeff Olsen, ON Semiconductor marketing director for Power Supply products. “With the implementation of the NCP1030, a single 3.0 mm by 4.9 mm footprint device replaces a cumbersome system design that required a PWM controller, a 200 V MOSFET in a large power package as the main power switch, a 200 V start-up MOSFET, a supervisory circuit and up to 12 other components.“

Package and Price
The NCP1030 is offered in a Micro8 package and priced at $1 per unit in 10,000 unit quantities. The NCP1031 is offered in an SO8 package and priced at $1.15 per unit in 10,000 unit quantities.
