ON Semiconductor™ and Gemplus Develop Technologies for Global Information Systems

Phoenix, AZ - June 12, 2000 - ON Semiconductor (Nasdaq: ONNN) today announced that Gemplus, the world's leading provider of smart card solutions, is embedding the GIC100 Smart Card Interface Controller within its whole range of GemCore-based smart card readers.

GemCore chipset technology is the result of years of research and development by the world's leading provider of smart card technology, products and solutions. It consists of an operating system (GemCore Controller) which manages all the communication between the smart card and the integrating device, and the GemCore Interface Chip (GIC100) which ensures high reliability for read/write operations.

The GIC100 has been designed for Gemplus by ON Semiconductor's European Design Center and is manufactured in their BiCMOS-based manufacturing facilities.

GemCore chipset offer is designed to simplify the integration of a smart card interface into devices such as personal computers, network computers, keyboards, ATM, vending machines, point of sales terminals, payphones, consumer electronics, handsets, and set top boxes.

In particular, all smart card readers from Gemplus' PC-Link range are built around the proven GemCore hardware and firmware architecture which enable them to meet all required computing and banking standards (PC/SC, WHQL, EMV).

" Since all electronic commerce applications require either EMV and/or Microsoft PC/SC WHQL certifications, customers deploying the certified Gemplus GemCore-based reader are provided with a competitive advantage.
