Phoenix, Arizona, October 27, 1999 - ON Semiconductor, formerly a division of Motorola, today announced that on November 1, it is adding Rochester Electronics to its qualified distributor list. Rochester is the company that is known as the "leaders on the trailing edge of technology." Their role will be to help ON Semiconductor customers when products reach their end of the life status.

Rochester Electronics is a value-added distributor that provides continuing customer service when suppliers discontinue products. Rochester's focus is on the end of life cycle that can cause problems for both the supplier and certain customers.

In addition to distribution, Rochester has manufacturing capability tied to their suppliers. As Curt Gerrish, President and CEO of Rochester Electronics notes, "Our close association with original suppliers allows us to manufacture devices using the original tooling, test programs and, and in some cases, even the actual testers. With ON Semiconductor, our initial efforts will be focused on defining and providing a variety of value-added services."

ON Semiconductor reduced its portfolio in 1998 to 17,000 products to focus on those semiconductor components that are attractive to a number of customers in many markets. In many cases, the products that were put on end of life status had not been purchased by any customer for more than a year. However, in a few instances, customers were still happy with the semiconductor component that they had designed into their product several years ago. With the largest component portfolio in the industry, ON Semiconductor frequently evaluates its products for their relevance in the market and has to make the decision to discontinue certain products. According to Ken Elzey, Vice President and Director of Sales for ON Semiconductor, "Nobody likes to deal with the end of life issue, but bringing in Rochester Electronics to help when these situations occur will make it a little easier for our customers. Rochester is recognized as an industry leader in this area."

Having the right products is viewed a key element to continued growth in the semiconductor components business. ON Semiconductor's focus on growth in analog ICs, as well as logic, power, and discrete semiconductors depends on having sufficient resources deployed in the growth areas. The addition of Rochester to the end of life process will allow the required focus and provides an improved service to customers.
