This year, onsemi released a variety of new industrial products and solutions which allowed us to continue to bring our innovations and vision to life. As a result, our continuous innovations were recognized by the power electronics industry. Below are a few of our favorite highlights from 2023.
Elite Power Simulator and Self-Service PLECS Model Generator
As high-power system design needs are rapidly increasing and Silicon Carbide (SiC) devices are becoming widely accepted as the preferred technology for a wide array of industrial applications, using a simulation tool that delivers first time-right design results is critical to shorten time to market while achieving maximum system performance. onsemi’s online-based SiC simulation tools, including the Elite Power Simulator and Self-Service PLECS Model Generator, were developed for power electronic engineers to quickly evaluate and select the best EliteSiC products for their specific applications. The tools provide meaningful insights on complex power electronic applications through system-level simulations at an early stage of the development cycle. Power electronic engineers can save time by obtaining accurate simulation data, thus enabling EliteSiC product selection tailored to their specific applications, instead of costly and time-consuming hardware fabrication and testing.
Typical industry system-level simulators that employ PLECS models are valid only for hard-switching, rendering simulation results for soft-switching applications highly inaccurate. onsemi’s industry-first PLECS models are valid for both hard and soft switching applications such as DC-DC LLC and CLLC Resonant, Dual Active Bridge, and Phase Shifted Full Bridge.
If you would like to greatly improve the accuracy of your simulation results, the Self-Service PLECS Model Generator allows you to build a tailored PLECS model for your application. The tool can be used for hard and soft switching applications, corner modeling, and custom parasitic environments, enabling virtual prototyping.
onsemi M3S EliteSiC devices are the perfect solution for high-frequency switching applications that employ hard-switched topologies. The 1200V EliteSiC M3S portfolio includes MOSFETs and power-integrated modules. Specifically designed for high-speed switching, these products have best-in-class figures of merits for switching losses, such as the industry-leading ultra-low Rds(on) and high power density. This series is designed to help power electronics engineers optimize energy efficiency and reduce system costs for a wide range of applications including on-board chargers (OBC) for 800 V electric vehicles (EVs), DC fast charging (DCFC), solar inverters, battery energy storage system (BESS).
The devices have a remarkable, industry-leading ~40% reduction in total switching losses compared to their previous-generation counterparts. These MOSFETs are offered in industry-standard power discrete and power module packages. While the discrete solutions are used for low to mid-power conversion by paralleling, power modules are ideally suited for high-power conversion stages. Earlier this year, the M3S EliteSiC devices received a gold-level LEAP award and were honored with the Power Semiconductor of the Year at the prestigious EE Awards Asia event.
The AR0822 from onsemi is an innovative image sensor that produces extraordinarily high-quality 4K video at 60 frames per second. It’s designed specifically to offer high performance in applications with challenging lighting conditions such as consumer and commercial security cameras, robotics, and industrial machine vision. The ultra-low-power AR0822 is an 8-megapixel, stacked, 1/1.8−inch back side illuminated CMOS digital image sensor based upon a 2.0 µm pixel. The sensor is capable of up to 120 dB dynamic range to cover harsh lighting with built-in intelligent linearization. This mitigates the effects of LED flicker due to using multiple images as well as eliminating any effects of motion blur from multi-image HDR. The AR0822 was recognized by the 2023 Electronics Industry Awards for Internet of Things Product of the Year.
Hyperlux LP Image Sensor Family
The HyperluxTM LP image sensor product family from onsemi is comprised of next-generation rolling shutter devices. The family includes three innovative sensors – the AR0544 with 5 MP resolution, the AR0830 with 8.3 MP resolution, and the AR2020 with resolution. This product family is designed for multiple market segments including smart doorbells & access control cameras, commercial surveillance cameras, biometric scanners, AR/VR/XR headsets, and more. These 1.4 µm pixel sensors deliver industry-leading image quality and low power consumption while delivering high performance in both visible and low-light conditions. The Hyperlux LP family includes purpose-oriented features like Wake on Motion, multiple ROI outputs, and several functional modes providing the ability to create highly efficient vision systems. The product family is well supported by onsemi’s industry-leading development software DevSuite and by a strong ecosystem of ISP/SoC/module partners.
