In this video, we will introduce you the SPM2 & SPM3 Intelligent Power Modules. Designers using these modules can build a more compact, reliable and efficient motor drive solution for industrial applications.

Full Transcript Below:

Hello, my name is Jon Harper, Member of Technical Staff at ON Semiconductor, responsible for power modules. Our SPM2 and SPM3 intelligent power modules are used in industrial motor drives. We have extended these families to cover power levels up to 10kW.

Both families have 600V and 1200V versions. Single-phase AC input motor drives generally use 600V modules. Three-phase AC input motor drives require 1200V modules. The modules contain an inverter power stage using gate drivers, temperature sense unit, bootstrap diodes and six IGBTs. Protection functions include short-circuit protection, soft turn-off protection and under-voltage lockout. These functions ensure reliable operation of the motor drive under all fault conditions.

Using our new Field Stop 3 IGBTs has increased the power capability of the families. The SPM3 can now house either 50A/600V or 20A/1200V IGBTs bringing the power level up to 5kW for both single- and three-phase input AC drives. The 35A/1200V SPM2 covers up to 7.5kW and we are sampling the 50A SPM2 which will bring the power level all the way up to 10kW.

These epoxy filled modules combine a leadframe and a DBC substrate. Such modules have three times better power cycling and ten times better thermal cycling than gel-filled modules. The 50A SPM3 module uses an aluminium nitride substrate. This has three times lower thermal resistance than the aluminium oxide substrates used in the other modules. This reduces the temperature change during power cycling and the maximum junction temperature, enhancing reliability.

We have some tools to help you do your designs.

The SPM2 and SPM3 evaluation boards let you test the module quickly and easily. Here is the SPM3 evaluation board. Both 600V and 1200V versions are available.

Our motion control design tool in the Power Supply Web Designer helps you quickly choose the right module based on your power rating, switching frequency and thermal design constraints.

The SPM2 and SPM3 application notes cover topics such as recommended layout and device mounting.

Designers using these modules can build a more compact, reliable and efficient motor drive solution. These modules are used in industrial drives, fans, pumps, compressors and other motor drives.
