When developing any type of system, it’s easy to run into a catch-22 situation where you need to test what you’ve already developed, but the other sub-systems required to enable you to carry out the testing have not yet been developed. Whether software systems or hardware products, the requirements are the same. You need a controller that can help validate the different sub-systems individually and verify their collective behavior at every stage of the development process.

For engineers developing Bluetooth® Low Energy (BLE) applications, Bluetooth® peripherals under development can be tested using a product such as the RSL10 USB Dongle from ON Semiconductor. The RSL10 USB Dongle enables rapid prototyping of peripherals for BLE devices by acting as a generic central device that can emulate anything a central application can do.

In addition to utilizing the RSL10 radio’s industry lowest power consumption of just 62.5 nanowatts (nW) while in Deep Sleep mode and 7 milliwatts (mW) peak receive power, the RSL10 USB Dongle is Bluetooth® 5 certified and also certified to international wireless regulations.

With support for up to 4 connections, the RSL10 USB Dongle enables developers to scan for, connect to and wirelessly interact with your peripherals while monitoring and logging their behavior, without having to wait until the entire system has been developed. This can lead to early detection of design issues and correction of performance problems, reducing overall design time and cost.

The RSL10 USB Dongle is supported by Bluetooth® Low Energy (BLE) Explorer software. The BLE Explorer provides support for capabilities such as scanning and reading advertising data, reading and writing of characteristics, and local device firmware updates.
