As demand for residential solar systems continues to grow, the need to reduce system losses while deploying more flexible architectures becomes paramount. Bidirectional capability in solar inverters is one such feature that improves efficiency, adds additional protection, and enables battery charging by AC mains in addition to the photovoltaic array.

Alongside improvements in solar inverter technology, onsemi’s latest devices such as Field Stop 7 (FS7) IGBTs and 3rd generation EliteSiC MOSFETs offer significant performance improvements. Both transistors offer improved switching and reduced conduction losses over previous generations for higher efficiency designs. Smaller form factor inverters may be developed with SiC devices having higher thermal conductivity and the potential to operate at higher switching frequencies as well. As this market develops further, onsemi continues to support with an extensive portfolio of discretes and modules for energy infrastructure applications.
