ON Semiconductor’s 8 Watt AC-DC Power Supply GreenPoint™ Reference Design for DTA Converter Boxes Exceeds ENERGY STAR® Requirements

Energy efficient open reference design supports emerging market for digital television adapters

APPLIED POWER ELECTRONICS CONFERENCE (APEC) – Austin, TX – Feb. 25, 2008 – ON Semiconductor (Nasdaq: ONNN), a leading global supplier of efficient power solutions, today introduced a GreenPoint™ open reference design for an 8 watt (W) ac-dc power supply for digital-to-analog adapters (DTAs). This reference design exceeds both the ENERGY STAR® guidelines revision 1.1 for DTA and the technical requirements of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), for both high active-mode power efficiency and low sleep-mode power consumption.

This reference design achieves active-mode efficiency of 75 percent across a range of output voltage and current combinations, delivering 5.5 W of output power with an input power of only 7.3 W – well below the maximum 8 W input power specified in the ENERGY STAR guidelines. In sleep-mode, the reference design consumes 720 milliwatts (mW) of input power. This power performance is well below the 1 W maximum input power specified in the ENERGY STAR guidelines and the 2 W maximum input power specified in the technical requirements of the NTIA’s final rule-making on its Digital Television Converter Box Coupon Program. (See https://www.ntia.doc.gov/ for the final rulemaking.) Additionally, in standby-mode (no load power mode), the solution consumes less than 200 mW.

“The Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) DTA converter box application is very challenging on many technical fronts – including system power requirements,” said Eric Schiff, Zoran Corporation’s director of Set-Top Box Product Marketing. “Zoran worked very closely with ON Semiconductor on the power supply design for the ATSC converter box. ON Semiconductor provided us with high efficiency, low-power components and outstanding technical support. As a result of this cooperation, one of our major customers, using this power supply design, gained NTIA certification with an ENERGY STAR® compliant ATSC converter box.”

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), if all DTAs sold in the U.S. met the ENERGY STAR specification, over the lifetime of the products, Americans could save approximately 13 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) and $1 billion in energy costs.

The 8 W ac-dc power supply reference design utilizes several ON Semiconductor power management devices and draws from its leading discrete component portfolio to achieve superior efficiency performance.

Key Products in the Reference Design Include:

NCP1308: This controller combines a true current mode modulator and a demagnetization detector to minimize the EMI signature and maximize efficiency, by operating in quasi-resonant mode. The NCP1308DR2G is offered in a SOIC-8 package, and priced at $0.47 per unit in 2,500-unit quantities.

NCP1595: This current mode PWM buck converter includes an integrated power switch and a synchronous rectifier. It can provide up to 1.5 A output current with high conversion efficiency. The NCP1595MNR2G is offered in a DFN-6 package, and is priced at $0.44 per unit in 3,000-unit quantities.

NTB30N06L: This 30 A, 60 V, N-channel logic level MOSFET is offered in a D2PAK package and priced at $0.59 per unit in 800-unit quantities.

TL431ACD: This three-terminal programmable shunt regulator diode is offered in a SO-8 package and priced at $0.21 per unit in 2,500-unit quantities.

MMBT2222AW: This NPN transistor is offered in a SC-70 package and priced at $0.04 per unit in 3,000-unit quantities.

All of these devices are RoHS compliant and are delivered in Pb-free packages.
