ON Semiconductor&#153 Introduces New Analog Integrated Circuit For Positive Voltage Regulation


Phoenix, AZ - April 25, 2000 - ON Semiconductor today announced the availability of the LM317M analog integrated circuit (IC), a three-terminal adjustable output positive voltage regulator in a compact SOT-223 package. Already offered in TO-220 and Dpak packages, the LM317M analog IC is a general purpose voltage regulator capable of serving a wide variety of space-constrained wireless and portable applications, providing local on-card regulation.

The LM317M analog IC is designed to supply an output current in excess of 500mA over an adjustable output voltage range of 1.2 volts to 37 volts. Because the output voltage range is easily adjustable with only two external resistors, substantial savings of cost and printed circuit board (PCB) space can be realized. The device is equipped with internal current limiting, internal overload protection, short circuit protection, thermal shutdown and safe area compensation, to create extremely safe and fool-proof designs.

"As portable and wireless consumer products become increasingly smaller, saving critical space in circuit board design has become increasingly important," said Ralph Quinsey, general manager of ON Semiconductor's Analog Integrated Circuit Division. "Analog designers will greatly benefit from the small form factor and reduced device count that is realized with the use of this device."

With a fixed resistor connection between the adjustment and output, the LM317 analog IC voltage regulator can be utilized as a precision current regulator. It can also be used as an especially simple adjustable switching regulator or programmable output regulator. Moreover, this device offers a compact package solution to the popular, industry standard LM317M series.

Samples and production quantities for the LM317MSTT3 and the LM317MBSTT3 analog ICs are currently available. Manufacturers suggested retail pricing for the LM317MSTT3 and LM317MBSTT3 analog ICs are suggested at $0.58 and $0.64, respectively, for quantities of 12K.
