Reference design for up to 180 watt LCD TV power supplies utilizes Microsemi Corporation’s CCFL Inverter Controller and supports ENERGY STAR® 3.0 efficiency standards

APPLIED POWER ELECTRONICS CONFERENCE (APEC) – Washington, D.C. – Feb. 16, 2009 – ON Semiconductor (Nasdaq: ONNN), a leading global supplier of high performance, energy efficient, silicon solutions, today released its latest GreenPoint™ open reference design for LCD TV power supplies. This 180 watt (W) High Voltage LCD Integrated Power Supply (HV-LIPS) combines the main system power with the backlight inverter. By implementing an architecture where the inverter is directly powered from the 400 volt (V) PFC rail, the reference design eliminates a complete power conversion stage, improving overall system efficiency, simplifying the design and reducing the bill of materials. The design supports the need for higher efficiency power supplies to meet the active and standby power requirement of the ENERGY STAR 3.0 TV standard that went into place in November 2008.

ON Semiconductor’s reference design for LCD TV power supplies meets IEC 61000-3-2 harmonic content requirements, and exceeds global standby requirements with typical standby power consumption of 400 milliwatts (mW) with a 50 mW load. ON Semiconductor was able to leverage a proprietary variable frequency control architecture to achieve up to 60 W output capability from the flyback stage while meeting the standby requirements, thus eliminating the need for a dedicated standby supply.

The HV-LIPS LCD TV Reference Design
The reference design addresses all functional blocks of the HV-LIPS LCD TV power supply, including power factor correction; control, signal, and audio power; high voltage backlight inverter; and CCFL drive and current balancing. The design utilizes several of ON Semiconductor’s newest power management devices and draws from its leading discrete component portfolio to achieve superior power efficiency performance. The design was completed in conjunction with Microsemi (Nasdaq:MSCC) to incorporate its latest CCFL backlight inverter and JIN Current Balancer technology for CCFL.

NCP1606 Critical Conduction Mode Power Factor Controller. The NCP1606 is an active power factor controller specifically designed for use as a pre-converter in medium power off line power supplies. It embeds a Critical Conduction Mode power factor control scheme that exhibits near-unity power factor across a wide range of input voltages and power levels. NCP1351 Variable Off-Time Controller. The NCP1351 is a current mode controller targeting low power off line flyback Switched Mode Power Supplies. Based on a fixed peak current technique (quasi fixed TON), the controller decreases its switching frequency as the load becomes lighter. As a result, a power supply using the NCP1351 naturally offers excellent no load power consumption, while optimizing the efficiency in other loading conditions. The NCP1351 is priced at $0.32 per unit in 2,500-unit quantities, in SOIC-8 packages; and at $0.36 per unit in 50-unit quantities, in PDIP-8 packages.

MUR550PF 5 A, 520 V Ultrafast Rectifier. The low forward voltage drop of the MUR550PF reduces forward conduction losses in DCM PFC applications. The MUR550PF is priced at $0.16 per unit, in 50-unit quantities for TO-220 packages, 1,500-unit quantities for axial lead packages, and 2,500-unit quantities for DPAK packages.

MBR20100CT 20 A, 100 V Schottky Rectifier. The MBR20100CT is priced at $0.55 per unit in 50-unit quantities, in TO-220 packages.

NTGD4167C Complementary, +2.9/-2.2 A, 30 V Power MOSFET. The NTGD4167C is priced at $0.16 per unit in 3,000-unit quantities, in TSOP-6 packages.

NTA4153N N-Channel, 915 mA, 20 V MOSFET with ESD Protection. The NTA1453N is priced at $0.07 per unit in 3,000-unit quantities, in SC-75 packages.

NTD14N03 N-Channel, 14 A, 25 V Power MOSFET. The NTD14N03 is priced at $0.09 per unit in 2,500-unit quantities, in DPAK packages.

LX6503 CCFL Inverter Controller with SYNC technology. The LX®6503 provides the key functions needed for LCD TV / Monitor displays in a simplified controller while providing reliable lamp striking, comprehensive brightness control modes and support for 24V inverter topologies in existing backlight applications.
