Phoenix, Arizona -- June 29, 1999 -- An innovative new high performance Switchmode Power Supply (SMPS) controller, introduced by Motorola Semiconductor Components Group today, is designed with multiple on-chip functions that reduce the system power consumption to less than 1.3W in standby mode. This high level of integration in a relatively small package also requires fewer external components - which greatly reduces the overall system cost and increases the efficiency of off-line converter designs.
The new unit, type MC44608, is the latest in a family of GreenLine(tm) SMPS controllers designed to consume less power in standby mode. This device operates in a fully controlled pulsed mode when in standby and provides an option to adjust the burst duty cycle.
The MC44608 incorporates a start-up current source which eliminates the need for an external start-up resistor, thereby greatly reducing the continuous current draw and increasing the system efficiency for fast lossless off-line start-ups. It also features an on-chip oscillator with switching frequencies of 40, 75 or 100KHz.

This new SMPS controller also comprises on-chip safety features that make it ideally suited for efficient and highly reliable power supply designs in TVs, VCRs, printers and other consumer and industrial designs. It includes a fail-safe open loop for SMPS run away protection, demagnetisation detection, maximum duty cycle, current limitation, thermal and over-voltage protection.
The MC44608 is available in a DIP-8 package with samples and production quantities now available. Pricing is suggested at $0.75 for quantities 10K.
