ON Semiconductor Receives Distinguished Industrial Awards from China’s Leading Electronics Magazines

BEIJING, China – April 17, 2008 – ON Semiconductor (Nasdaq: ONNN) today announced that it has won two notable industrial awards for its ESD9L and NCP5810 from China’s leading electronics magazines.

The ESD protection device ESD9L won “Product of the Year 2007” award from Electronic Products China while the dual output DC-DC converter NCP5810 is ranked top 5 in Portable Design China’s “Power Management Survey 2008” after competing with more than 30 competitive products.

Electronic Products China’s Product of the Year 2007 award is given to products that feature great technical or application improvement, innovative designs or higher cost-effectiveness compared with marketing competitors. Portable Design China has very strict judging standards for the Power Management Survey 2008 award. Products are judged according to 12 criteria, including performance, power consumption, software compatibility, ease-of-design, reliability and reference design.

Relying on their high performance, cost-effectiveness, innovative technologies and ease of design, ON Semiconductor’s ESD9L and NCP5810 stood out among the candidates and won. The ESD9L is a single line ESD protection device that offers 0.5 pico farad (pF) capacitance and industry-leading low clamping voltage. It has the industry’s smallest package for ESD protection, ideal for safeguarding high speed data lines in portable applications such as cellphones, MP3 players, PDAs and digital cameras. This ultra-small single line ESD protection package gives designers ultimate flexibility in size.

In order to overcome the limitations of traditional silicon TVS diodes, ON Semiconductor employed a breakthrough process technology to integrate ultra-low capacitance pin diodes with high power TVS diodes into a monolithic die that can be used as a high performance off chip ESD protection solution. This integrated ESD protection technology platform preserves the excellent clamping and low leakage performance of traditional silicon TVS diode technology while reducing the capacitance from 50 pF to 0.5 pF. The total capacitance of 0.5 pF makes the ESD9L suitable for high-speed applications such as USB2.0 high speed (480 Mb/s) and HDMI (1.65 Gb/s). The ESD9L clamps an input ESD waveform of 15 kilovolts (kV) per the IEC61000-4-2 standard, to less than 7 volts (V) in a matter of nanoseconds. This leads the industry in clamping voltage performance and ensures protection for the most sensitive integrated circuits.

The NCP5810 is a 2 watt (W) dual output dc-dc converter that offers both positive and negative output. The device’s output voltage accuracy, high switching frequency, and small package size makes it particularly suitable for powering a display driver in Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diodes (Active Matrix OLED or AMOLED) panel, an emerging display technology for portable applications.

Active Matrix OLED, the latest display technology, delivers better color contrast and video playback quality than today’s LCD displays but creates added power management challenges for design engineers. For example, because AMOLED displays are sensitive to changes in power supply voltages, ON Semiconductor designed the NCP5810 to provide accurate feedback voltage with 1 percent tolerance and a fast line transient response with overshoot of 4 millivolt (mV), given a 500 mV input voltage variation.

Featuring high overall efficiency up to 85 percent at 1.75 megahertz (MHz) oscillator frequency, the NCP5810 delivers best-in-class performance. In order to complement the slim form factor of AMOLED display, the converter switches at the high 1.75 MHz frequency, allowing the use of small inductors and ceramic capacitors. Its ultra-thin package with 0.55 mm thickness allows the NCP5810 to fit into the thinnest portable design form factor. In addition, it preserves battery power in shut-down mode with true cut-off function that limits the leakage display current to typically 1 microamp (uA). Additionally, the NCP5810 features cycle-by-cycle peak current limit and thermal shut down protection.
