What is a Halogen Free ("Green") Product?

ON Semiconductor defines “Green” mold compounds as those compounds which are:
Halogen-Free: According to IEC 61249-2-21 definition:

900 ppm maximum chlorine
900 ppm maximum bromine
1500 ppm maximum total halogens
AND
contain less than 1,000 ppm Sb2O3

ON Semiconductor has offered our DFN/QFN package families in Halogen-free mold compounds per the above definition since inception. Additionally, we are qualifying and converting other packages to the Halogen-free mold compounds. All Halogen-free mold compound introductions conform to rigid ON Semiconductor and industry accepted criteria for quality, reliability and package robustness. Guarantee of commercial availability in required quantities and suitable performance in manufacturability is also considered in selecting Halogen-free mold compounds. On Semiconductor conversion to Halogen-free mold compounds is traceable via date codes and factory locations. Please contact your local sales office for more information.
