USB Type C Solutions – Fundamental Overview

What is USB Type-C?

What is USB Power Delivery (PD)?
One port, One single cable:
The USB-C (technically known as USB Type-C) is the new standard for USB connectors, ports, and cables. The USB type-C connector is reversible, 24-pins, double - sided connector and offers connectivity to multiple end devices such as laptops, tablets, PCs, monitors, and smart phones with one single cable.
Bidirectional power charging:
The latest USB Power Delivery specification supported by the USB-C standard allows for power transfers of up to 100 watts (20 volts, 5 amperes), enabling fast charging. The USB Type-C standard allows for bidirectional power - this enables the product with the power (Host or Peripheral) to provide the power.
Super Speed:
Almost all devices that support the USB 3.1 use the USB-C port. The USB 3.1 has a top speed of 10 Gbps and can deliver a power output of up to 20 volts (100 watts) and 5 amperes.
Fast charging & data transmission simultaneously:
The USB Power Delivery Specification offers Fast Role Swap capability – it enables the maximum functionality of USB by providing more flexible power delivery along with data over a single cable at the same time.
Power Delivery (PD) support:
The USB Type-C allows every port to be your power, data or video port.

Support different protocols:
The USB Type-C ports can also support a variety of different protocols using Alternate Modes, which allows you to have adapters that can output HDMI, VGA, DisplayPort, or other types of connections from that single USB port. This one cable eliminates the need of having individual cables for each end device.

Dual Role Port (DRP), Downstream Facing Port (DFP),
and Upstream Facing Port (UFP)

Based on the specifications of data flow in a USB connection and the direction of power in a Power Delivery connection, different types of USB Type-C ports were developed.

Ports that play a role in data flow and power delivery:
  • Downstream Facing Port (DFP):
The USB Type-C port that is present on a host to which other devices can be connected, e.g. downstream port of a hub or laptops/PCs. It is also known as the provider/source USB port that is responsible for providing power over the power conductor.

  • Upstream Facing Port (UFP):
The USB Type-C port that is present on a device that connects to a USB host, e.g. Flash Drive, Monitors, Mouse, etc. It is also known as the consumer/sink USB port that is responsible for sinking power from the power conductor.

  • Dual Role Port (DRP):
The USB Type-C port that can switch between being a DFP or a UFP. It can operate as a provider or a consumer as its power delivery role can be reversed dynamically.
