On Board Charging
Plug-in hybrid/electric vehicles (xEV) include a high voltage battery sub-system that requires some form of external charging. Multiple methods to accomplish this task are available. Some of them are built into the vehicle itself (On Board Charger or OBC), while others are external and may be incorporated through a wired connection (Fixed Charger) or through wireless energy transfer (Wireless Charger).
The on−board charger (OBC) market is growing rapidly as the demand for battery powered electric vehicles is increasing worldwide. An OBC system is composed of AC−DC converter with power factor correction (PFC) cascaded with a DC−DC converter to control power delivery to the battery.
Nowadays, so called plug in hybrid as well as fully electric vehicles are catching more and more attraction triggered by the reduction of pollution as it is normally happening with pure combustion engine. Nevertheless, there is at least one feature that is common to all of them electric energy is accumulated in dedicated battery pack and it is used in electric motors afterwards.
With the coming electrification of the automotive market, the need of battery chargers is more and more demanded. With the simple equation more power, shorter the recharge time is, a 3−phase supply is here considered which can provide up to ‘3x’ the power of a single−phase supply
The SEC-3PH-11-OBC-EVB is a three-phase On Board Charger (OBC) platform achieving state-of-the-art system efficiency with AEC-Q SiC power devices and drivers.
This evaluation board provides a reference design on PFC and LLC in a 6.6kW OBC system with SiC power devices and drivers, which mainly comprises of the high switching performance SiC diode (FFSP3065A), SiC mosfet (NVHL020N090SC1), 6A SiC mosfet driver (NCP51705MNTXG), 900V 60mΩ SiC mosfet (NVHL060N090SC1).
