Electric Vehicle (EV) Auxiliary Power

Auxiliary power supplies are used in modules for vehicles with some level of electrification on the power train including Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicles (MHEV), Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) and Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV). ON Semiconductor is a strong supplier to automotive customers for the devices needed in these auxiliary power supplies including power supply ICs, SiC MOSFETs, MOSFETs, IGBTs, SiC Diodes, Diodes and Schottky Diodes. Auxiliary power supplies can be found in On Board Charging (OBC), Traction Inverter, Belt Integrated Starter Generator (BISG), Integrated Beltless Starter Generator (iBSG) as well as DC/DC Converter and other electric vehicle charging modules. Additionally, these power supplies may go in either direction across the isolation boundary, meaning that the components may operate from a 12VDC, 48VDC or 400-800VDC nominal power rail. The auxiliary power supply is typically designed using a flyback topology to provide power supply isolation using a transformer across an isolation barrier. These supplies provide an output power of 15W to 20W but may be as high as 40W. The output voltage rail of an auxiliary power supply can be anywhere from 5V to 24V depending on the system requirements and may feed power directly to microcontrollers, other integrated circuits or may be used as an intermediate voltage step to supply input power to other power supply ICs. Some applications may not require this auxiliary power supply to be isolated, in such cases a buck or buck-boost power supply IC can be used. If the auxiliary power supply is providing isolation for gate driver voltages the output will typically be a multiple output transformer that generates the positive and negative drive voltages for MOSFETs, SiC MOSFETs or IGBTs.
