Overview
onsemi SiC JFETs are high-performance, normally-on transistors available with voltage ratings from 650 V to 1700 V. Leveraging the intrinsic advantages of SiC technology, they deliver ultra-low on-resistance (RDS(on)), low gate charge (Qg), and high-frequency switching capability, enabling reduced conduction and switching losses while maximizing power density. Their highly efficient architecture utilizes significantly less die area than alternative technologies, supporting compact, high-performance system designs.
Optimized for high-efficiency power conversion, SiC JFETs are well suited for Power Supply Units (PSUs), intermediate bus converters (IBC), and high-voltage DC-DC converters that support the growing power requirements of AI data center infrastructure. The devices also excel in hot-swap, eFuse, and linear-mode applications, enabling fast, reliable protection and control in Solid-State Circuit Breakers (SSCBs), EV Battery Disconnect Units (BDUs), and advanced power distribution systems.

Flyback Converter Using Source-Switched SiC JFET

In a datacenter hot swap event, inserting a power supply with uncharged or partially charged input capacitors into a live rack can create a significant inrush current. This current surge may cause a voltage dip on the DC bus, leading to controller resets and system instability. SiC JFET Inrush current limiting prevents these large current spikes, enabling reliable hot-swappable operation.
