FAD3224 Evaluation board

Overview

The evaluation board is designed as a flexible hardware platform for the evaluation of low side MOSFET gate drive applications using the FAD3224 dual low side gate driver. It operates from a 12 V battery level supply (VBAT) representative of automotive environments. The VBAT input is protected by an ideal diode stage implemented using controller U2 and external MOSFETs, providing reverse polarity protection and reverse current blocking with minimal conduction loss. Local bulk and ceramic decoupling capacitors are placed close to the supply rails to suppress voltage transients and reduce supply impedance during switching events.

At the core of the board is the FAD3224, which provides two independent high current gate drive channels controlled by inputs INA/INB and enable signals ENA/ENB. The driver directly controls on board N channel power MOSFETs (NVMFWS1D1N04XMT1G) configured as low side switches, enabling realistic evaluation under practical switching conditions. Each gate path includes series gate resistors that allow adjustment of switching speed and mitigation of ringing and electromagnetic effects, supporting analysis of gate drive behavior across different load and timing scenarios.

To ensure robust operation with inductive and dynamic loads, comprehensive protection circuitry is implemented. Gate to source Zener clamp networks limit the maximum VGS and protect the MOSFET gate oxide against overvoltage stress, while drain to source TVS clamp circuits suppress voltage spikes generated by wiring and load inductance during turn off events. Transient energy is safely dissipated either in the MOSFET linear region or in the TVS devices. The board further provides oscilloscope test points, high?current output connectors, a VBAT presence LED indicator, and a board to board header interface for stacking or integration into larger evaluation setups.
