ON Semiconductor today introduced the second phase of the new generation of ECL based logic ICs. Known as the ECLinPS Plus series, these logic chips satisfy power supply requirements of 2.5V, 3.3V and 5V. They also offer a 30% AC performance advantage and tighter skews than comparable ECL logic series currently on the market. With system speeds now exceeding several hundred megahertz, designers have more options to choose from in creating high speed systems that require faster throughput and higher accuracy rates.
The first phase of this new ECL family - called the "Plus" series - was introduced earlier this year. ECLinPS Plus is the solution to the market demand for higher data transfer speed operation in excess of 500 MHz. This latest addition to the ECLinPS Plus family boasts enhanced functionality in addition to the faster propagation delays, rise / fall times and tighter skews than the previous ECL families.
ECLinPS Plus provides superior isolation over multiple gate logic. It is a family of single / multi (essential logic primitive) gates, multiplexers, flops, etc. that already satisfies 3.3V and 5V system requirements. Two new functions, EP111 and EP210, both timing circuits, are compatible with both 2.5V and 3.3V supplies. ON Semiconductor plans to add additional products to the portfolio. Packaged gates switch in 170ps typically with flip-flop toggle frequencies at over 3GHz utilizing the advantage of flow-through pinouts. Some of the devices are direct pin replacements to the already available ECLinPS Lite logic series.
"The migration plan for ECLinPS Plus is to eventually offer products that satisfy all power supply requirements," comments Sandra Lowe, vice president and general manager of the logic products business for ON Semiconductor. "ON Semiconductor offers the only ECL product portfolio that addresses system speeds at 2.5 Gigabits and above."
As with the original ECLinPS Plus series, this latest product offering will continue to provide the adhesion for high speed systems for the future. The series will also find use in applications such as ATE systems, computer and network systems, optical data networks and high bandwidth amplifiers.
These ECLinPS Plus devices are housed in small, space saving, standard SOIC, TSSOP and TQFP packages. The small package sizes make them ideal for pin cards and other applications that require density, yet maintaining signal integrity.
This second phase of the ECLinPS Plus Logic family includes 19 new functions consisting of 10 essential logic primitives, 7 CMOS/TTL translating functions and 2 timing circuits in 8-lead SOIC/TSSOP, 20-lead TSSOP, and 32-lead TQFP packages. Most functions are in full production release today with the remaining devices being available by the end of 1999. Additional functions will be added to the ECLinPS Plus family throughout 2000.
