ON Semiconductor Announces Post Regulation, Dual N-Channel MOSFET Driver That Delivers Improved Efficiency for ATX and SMPS Power Supplies

The new NCP4330 provides a more efficient way to convert a 3.3 V output from a 5 V power train than commonly utilized magnetic amplifier control circuits

PCIM China 2005 – Shanghai – March 16, 2005 – A leading global supplier of power conversion solutions, ON Semiconductor (Nasdaq: ONNN) today announced the NCP4330 – a post regulation, dual N-Channel MOSFET driver that delivers improved efficiency when implemented in forward converters most commonly found in ATX and high-power switch mode power supplies (SMPS).

The NCP4330 features drive outputs for series FETs and free-wheeling synchronous FETs, to deliver higher efficiency than silicon rectifiers generally used for this purpose. When compared to traditional magnetic amplifier control circuit solutions, this device offers more compact and cost-effective implementation. The device offers an efficient means of deriving 3.3 volt (V) or other outputs from the 5 V power train, while not requiring additional windings or terminals on the windings or terminals on the power supply’s power transformer. The secondary alternating current (AC) signal directly feeds the NCP4330 to minimize power dissipation, while reducing the power circuit’s overall part count.

The overlap management technique offered in the NCP4330 allows soft switching – which results in efficient higher frequency operation. As such, this device is ideal for power supplies operating at frequencies up to 400 kilohertz (kHz). This would include the new generation of ATX as well as Telecom DC-DC converters. Finally, this device integrates under voltage lockout and thermal shutdown for rugged designs.

ON Semiconductor plans to present an application paper on the NCP4330 titled, "An Efficient Subregulator for Outputs of Forward Converters" written by Charles E. Mullet at the PCIM China 2005 conference to be held in Shanghai from March 15-17.
