ON Semiconductor&#153 Adds Dual Low Dropout Voltage Regulator with 1V ON/OFF Control for Portable Systems

Phoenix, AZ - July 18, 2000 - ON Semiconductor (Nasdaq: ONNN), a leading manufacturer of power management solutions for wireless, automotive and networking and computing applications, today announced the availability of the MC33762 dual ultra low noise, low dropout (LDO) voltage regulator with 1 volt ON/OFF control. The MC33761, the single version with similar voltage configurations, was introduced earlier in June 2000.

The MC33762 is the most recent addition to the ON Semiconductor line of LDO regulators. It achieves an impressive 40 5Vrms noise level without an external bypass capacitor and is a natural candidate for noise sensitive circuits in portable systems. Ideally suited for applications where noise and space are at a premium, the MC33762 LDO regulator is a good candidate for various battery operated products, including bursting systems such as TDMA phones, where its novel architecture prevents undue undershoots. It is also intended for use in noise sensitive circuits such as VCOs and RF stages and is ready for 1V platforms. With a static line regulation better than -75dB, the device naturally shields the downstream electronics against choppy lines.

Housed in a small Micro8 package, this LDO offers weight and cost savings because it requires no external bypass capacitors. Additionally, the lack of external capacitors allows it to boast of faster response times of 405sec, in repetitive mode, from OFF to ON. A 1 volt ON/OFF control enables minimal current consumption which results in very low battery drain for cellular phones and battery operated end products. Adding to the cost savings, designers can use less expensive ceramic capacitors in circuits with the MC33762.

Other features include a nominal current output of 80mA with a 100mA peak capability, ripple rejection of 70dB (at 1kHz) and output precision of 1.5% at 25 0C, a typical dropout of 90mV at 30mA, and 160mV at 80mA, and contains internal thermal shutdown circuitry. Standard Vout selections range from 2.5 volts to 3.0 volts.

ON Semiconductor offers a full line of LDO regulators with very low dropout, small package size and unique features that make them great for portable applications. The MC33762DM-2525R2, MC33762DM-2828R2 and MC33762DM-3030R2 are offered in 2.5 volt, 2.8 volt and 3.0 volt configurations respectively. They are all packaged in Micro8 packages.
