What's driving the move to Pb-free processes?

ON Semiconductor has made this change to meet customers' increasing demand to meet Global Environmental Standards. Tin-lead (SnPb) solder has been widely utilized for electrical connections because of its convenience, economy, and electrical and mechanical characteristics. As a result of recent environmental concerns regarding lead (Pb), the requirement for Pb-free semiconductors has been receiving increasing attention within the semiconductor industry. Countries around the world continue to enact stricter bans on the content of hazardous materials in semiconductors. Such legislation has prompted the semiconductor industry to develop environmentally friendly products.

What is ON's definition of “Pb-free?”

In compliance with the RoHS directive, the maximum concentration values in weight percent of Lead is1000 ppm or 0.1%. The effort has primarily been on Pb-free external lead finish/plating.

Does your company have a roadmap for Pb-free development?

ON Semiconductor has converted to Pb-free externally plated products. A request for support of Pb-free products in production volumes should be submitted through the local Sales Representative. This is to provide ON Semiconductor the information needed to adjust our plating capacity to ensure full support of Pb-free product volumes.

Can you please provide details on product availability, qualification time schedule?

ON Semiconductor is actively converting to a Pb-free environment. Customers that are not able to convert their manufacturing processes at this time are asked to please communicate your needs with your Sales Representative.

Are there additional costs to moving to Pb-free devices? Will Pb-free packages cost more?

At this time, ON Semiconductor is offering Pb-free pricing comparable to leaded devices.

How will one be able to distinguish between lead containing and Pb-free product on the shelf or at incoming?

Intermediate Container Labels – Labels on reels, tubes, and other primary containers will have Pb-free logo, 2LI printed on the label per JEDEC standard JESD97.

Intermediate Box Labels – Intermediate boxes will have the same Pb-free indicator, Pb-free logo, 2LI, so that product on shelves can be easily identified to the status regarding Pb-free.

For existing packages that are currently offered solely with a Pb-free finish the current part number will now include a ‘G; suffix to differentiate a leaded product from a Pb-free product. This is intended to clearly identify parts that are Pb-free and qualified for compatibility with Pb-free board mount assembly processing. Customers who are receiving Pb-free parts without a G-suffix part number are required to change to the G-suffix part.

For packages that are currently offered with a Pb containing lead finish, the Pb-free version of the device will be offered under a new ON part number. In most cases, the new part number will be the existing Pb containing part number concatenated with a “G” suffix to denote the Pb-free lead finish and qualified compatibility with Pb-free board mount assembly processing.

Pb-free products may also be identified by unique product marking. Where space permits, Pb-free packages are marked with a "G" character after the device number. If there is no space for a character, a micro-dot is used.

Where do customers send requests for Pb-free packages? Orders? Samples?

Customers may directly contact their Sales Representative or Customer Service Representative to place orders for Pb-free product and samples or request them via the on line web service.

If 100% tin plating finish, what qualification process is used to evaluate the risk of tin whiskers?

On Semiconductor has performed the NEMI/JEITA/JEDEC defined tests concerning tin whiskers.

Why 100% tin with a known concern for whisker growth?

100% Sn plating is a cost effective, backwards compatible solution for Pb-free plating. And although whiskers are a risk, industry data indicates it is a very low risk.

Will ON products contain lead after this conversion?

Some ON products will still contain lead (Pb) in the die attach. This is permitted under RoHS regulations.

What are ON's plans to reduce other non-environmentally friendly compounds in its products?

ON Semiconductor is converting from SnPb (Tin Lead) plated products. Customers that are not able to convert their manufacturing processes at this time must communicate your needs with your Sales Representative.

Is a lead-free component compatible with SnPb solder paste?

Pure Sn and NiPdAu are forward/backward compatible
SnAgCu and SnBi may not be backward compatible

Yes. Pb-free part numbers have a "G" suffix.

Will the part marking change?

Are the quality and reliability standards different for Pb-free packages than for existing packages?

For the SMDs, reclassification of the moisture sensitivity level (MSL) at a peak reflow temperature of 260°C +5/-0 °C is required in addition to solderability validation. The MSL reclassification is performed on the largest die size that is used in the package. The tests to be performed typically include:

Will all existing SnPb product withstand reflow temperatures up to 260°C?

Most of our devices will currently withstand 260°C with SnPb plating. We are classifying the MSL level at 260°C.

How will Pb-free and 260°C compliant reflow products be identified?

All packages will be qualified to 260°C +5/-0 °C re-flow profiles per JEDEC standard J-STD-020C. The bar code label on the reel, tube or rail, and the intermediate boxes will have the Pb-free logo, 2LI printed on those labels.

Can a customer reference your data sheets to determine which devices are Pb-free?

ON Semiconductor is in the process of updating all data sheets to reflect the Pb-free products. Should you require a data sheet that has not yet been updated, contact your Sales representative for priority service. Data sheets can be provided within 24 hrs of request.

Does this effect the MSL rating of the devices? What is the difference?

The MSL (Moisture Sensitivity Level) rating will be noted on the barcode label. If there is a change in the MSL rating of a package, appropriate packing precautions will be taken before any product is shipped by ON Semiconductor. The majority of ON's packages have maintained the same MSL rating at 260°C +5/-0 °C as they had at 235°C +5/-0 °C.
