From IGBTs and power MOSFETs to gate drivers, power modules, motor controllers, wide bandgap devices and controllers, our broad portfolio can address the full range of voltages and power levels for applications in the solar and energy storage, consumer, networking, telecom, server and industrial end-markets. With decades of experience in power electronics, we have the products, knowledge and quality to enable high active-mode efficiency, low-standby power, and power factor correction.

Cloud Power

Computing and connectivity are key parts of our infrastructure, and every processor, memory bank or wireless base station needs power.

As these functions move into the Cloud, efficiency and reliability become more and more important. ON Semiconductor’s solutions for AC-DC conversion, multiphase conversion, point-of-load supplies, and hot swap protection support the full power range and various functions needed to power cloud infrastructure.

Smart Building

A Smart Building enables various IoT devices to communicate with each other over the internet via an intelligent network and control infrastructure that can separate the application from the core function of the connected devices, the provisioning of new devices, applications, and services.

Intelligent building infrastructure supports real-time remote sensing of the interior environment, control, and programming of remote smart devices. Connected lighting systems deployed with an array of environmental and image sensors offer power savings and high-efficiency together while addressing comfort and safety concerns. Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology provides safe transfer of power from power sourcing equipment (PSE) to the powered devices (PD). ON Semiconductor provides prototyping and complete solutions throughout the entire connected building design process, featuring energy-efficient sensing, connectivity, and compute SoCs.

Silicon Carbide Solutions

ON Semiconductor is developing a complete ecosystem of devices as a foundation for wide bandgap power designs, including Silicon Carbide (SiC) diodes and SiC MOSFETs, Gallium Nitride (GaN) HEMTs, SiC and GaN drivers, and integrated modules.

Next-generation SiC and GaN-based devices provide the ideal performance characteristics of the highest reliability, robustness, and ruggedness that result in increased switching frequency, efficiency, and power density and reduced power loss, component count, size, and weight. Wide bandgap (WBG) materials can power today’s solutions and future applications, including Solar and Wind Power, Vehicle Electrification, Cloud Computing, EV Charging, and 5G Communications.

In addition to our live webinars, we offer you multiple on-demand product views and application highlights videos.
Power over Ethernet and Connected Lighting

The drive for more intelligent energy management and resources places increased focus on combining power delivery and data transfer. Power over Ethernet (PoE) perfectly fills that gap.

In this webinar, learn about the latest state-of-play from the Ethernet Alliance and emerging Connected Lighting and VLC technology. We also explore details that can make or break a PoE system.

Get Started, Go Deep with the Motor Development Kit

Motor-driven systems are a foundational element of industrial facilities and processes. Motor drives increase the need for better efficiency, smaller size, and higher intelligence – which is a daunting design challenge.

ON Semiconductor and Xilinx’s Motor Development Kit (MDK) jumpstarts your design with a quick startup out of the box and powerful resources and tools to implement your application-specific functions and AI. This webinar introduces the MDK and walks through the design journey, showing the features that enable robust motor control and monitoring. Our partner, Xilinx, joins us to discuss control, algorithm, and programming.

xEV Solutions Overview

Vehicle Electrification is a crucial technology for reducing carbon emissions, increasing vehicle efficiency, and reducing oil dependency.

Different architectures, like Battery Electric (BEV), Hybrid-Electric (HEV), Plug-in Hybrid-Electric (PHEV), and Fuel Cell Electric (FCEV) vehicles, demand new powertrain systems with more power content and innovative power technologies. ON Semiconductor offers all the core technologies and packaging solutions to support the vehicle electrification revolution, and this webinar presents the most exciting solutions for this market

SiC Solutions for Non-Traction HV Applications

The increasing demand for efficiency and power density in any application inside a hybrid/electric car pushes in the direction of innovative and efficient power technologies.

Wide-Gap semiconductor technologies are the solution to address the request to have low switching losses and high thermal behavior. In particular, SiC technology is now a reliable alternative to reach high levels of efficiency and performance in traction inverter, Onboard Charging, and DC-DC converter applications.

48-volt Systems are Here: An Introduction to Mild Hybrid Systems and Technologies

Automotive electrification is becoming more mainstream as the need to reduce CO2 emissions becomes more critical in fighting climate change.

While there are many approaches to electrification, 48-volt mild hybrid systems are an “easy” path towards improving the fuel efficiency of traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Also known as belt starter generators (BSG) and integrated starter generators (ISG), 48-volt systems enable stop/start functionality and can also boost acceleration, power vehicles electrically for short distances, and support a range of 12-volt hydraulic/mechanical systems, such as power steering, that are migrating to 48 volts. In this presentation, ON Semiconductor explores the rationale for electrification, reviews 48-volt mild hybrid system topologies, and introduces critical semiconductor technologies that make these systems possible.

VE-Trac™ Solutions for Traction Inverter Applications

The main traction inverter significantly contributes to the vehicle’s overall efficiency in terms of its acceleration and driving range.

Power system designers must carefully evaluate both conduction and switching losses when selecting the inverter module’s power electronics components to achieve the vehicle’s targeted drivetrain performance. The ON Semiconductor VE-Trac™ family of solutions addresses the demands of efficiency, power density, and optimized thermal performance.

Automotive Power Modules for 48-volt and HV Applications

Automotive power modules can be the perfect solution to address the needs of high power density, high thermal performance, and parasitic optimization.

As an alternative to the discrete approach, the power module is the best option for a rapid design cycle and an efficient solution. Based on reliable transfer molded packaging technology, the automotive power module can address power applications in the 48-volt and HV domains.

Improved Solar Inverter Efficiency and Power Density with SiC Hybrid and Full SiC MOSFET Modules

The worldwide demand for solar inverters continues to snowball, driven both by the growth in renewable energy and the decreasing electricity cost from solar farms.

These solar farms use strings of solar panels rated at 1100 volts or 1500 volts. Using 1500 volts reduces the overall installation cost per kilowatt compared with 1100-volt systems but requires higher voltages on the boost and inverter circuits in the solar inverter. For reduced maintenance costs, solar farms generally use several smaller interchangeable inverters rather than one large central inverter.

We review how to increase the power density of 1100-volt inverters using full SiC boost modules. SiC hybrid modules configured in either symmetric boost or flying capacitor boost topologies increase the power density for 1500-volt inverters. Finally, we review the benefit of using SiC diodes in the output stages of 1100-volt and 1500-volt solar inverters.

How to use Physical and Scalable Models to Optimize System Performance

Modern-day power electronics encompasses a broad spectrum of semiconductor device types, all of which present unique benefits and trade-offs in the design spectrum.

Such devices include IGBTs, Super Junction MOSFETs, Trench MOSFETs, GaN HEMTs, SiC MOSFETs, and SiC diodes. Efficient power electronic design hinges on the availability of accurate and predictive simulation models such as physical and scalable models provided by ON Semiconductor to realize all the individual device benefits and trade-offs.
