Smart Home & Building

smart homeA smart home or building is based on an intelligent network fabric to enable IoT products to communicate with each other or the Internet.

In the home, this allows remote sensing, control or programming of an array of automated electronic devices. For example, a homeowner on vacation can use a phone, tablet or PC to arm a home security system, control temperature gauges, switch appliances on or off, control lighting, program a home theater or entertainment system, and perform many other tasks.

The essential requirements:

  • Devices are connected
  • Connected devices have some level of intelligence
  • The home or building is connected to the cloud
  • Ability to split the application from the primary function of the device (for example, a stereo could be used to broadcast an alert)
  • Customer can add new apps or services

Similarly, smart commercial building services include monitoring, control and maintenance of lighting, temperature, water heating, and surveillance systems, amongst others. Enhanced energy and operational efficiency are the primary focus, together with managing the comfort and safety of occupants.

The smart home or building network fundamentally encompasses communications, entertainment, security, convenience, and information systems.  With our broad portfolio of building blocks for smart devices, connected sensors, and the network fabric, ON Semiconductor is able to comprehensively address the needs of these systems.
