When will it be required that Wall plug in power supplies in the United States meet Class 5 Energy Efficiency criteria?
The US ENERGY STAR® program has phased out the voluntary External Power Supply Standard Version 2.0 effective at the end of December 2010. In its place on a product specific basis, they have instead indicated that external power supplies used for certain end products such as audio/video equipment achieve the Level V requirement as part of meeting the standard. A quote from the announcement letter is listed below:
“…. of note, it is EPA’s intention that current ENERGY STAR product specifications with requirements for the use of an ENERGY STAR EPS (e.g., computers, displays, televisions) will be changed to require a Level V EPS as designated under the International Efficiency Marking Protocol, which is consistent with ENERGY STAR Version 2.0 EPS performance levels.”
Manufacturers interested in ENERGYSTAR and the relevant product standards can access information on specific product requirements at the Energystar Partners Website.
While there are quite a few end products such as Appliances, TVs, audio/video equipment which have Energystar standards, not all products have dedicated categories.
