regarding MC 1496
we are using the two inputs pins 1 & 4 as differential inputs.
also, two carriers inputs are in differential mode.
is that OK?
Also, in the test circuits a carrier null pot is shown between pins 1 and 4.
is that necessary.
We are using the chip as a RF detector.

Both the carrier and modulation inputs are actually differential inputs. It’s fine to configure as single ended, or differential.
The null circuit is used to balance the signal level of the single-ended input being split going into the differential inputs of the amplifier. As you mention you are using differential inputs, then I believe the nulling circuit is no longer essential for your application. As explained in detail in the application note, the signal levels of both the carrier and modulation/RF inputs are very important to understand in order to achieve the optimum performance of the circuit.
