Environmental Sustainability Symposium
Annually, ON Semiconductor convenes
a corporate symposium to review the conservation successes of the previous year
and identify areas where new and existing in-house sustainability programs can be
expanded or improved. This working event - sponsored by John Nelson, vice president, chief
operating office (COO) and chief environmental officer - is attended by members of the
company’s global manufacturing, quality, environmental health and safety (EHS), supply
chain and facilities teams. These teams work year-round to support and measure the company’s many sustainability efforts.
Key Sustainability and Conservation Initiatives
Five key initiatives - comprising more than 100 individual projects - have been identified as priorities that the ON Semiconductor is committed to continuing to drive. Of these, there are 71 energy conservation projects and 39 chemical recycling and waste reduction projects. In addition to being good for the environment, these projects will also benefit the company by saving an estimated $2.8 million in 2009.
Community Programs
ON Semiconductor and its employees participate in numerous community support and volunteer programs including drives for food banks, blood, clothing and school supplies. Active mentoring programs include participation in Habitat for Humanity, Cancer Awareness & Research and Education focusing on Math and Sciences as well as local food banks and disaster relief . Each campus works to give back to the community in which they reside.

EICC Membership
ON Semiconductor is an applicant member of the Electronic Industry Citizenship
Coalition (EICC) – an organization that promotes an industry code of
conduct for global electronics supply chains to improve working and
environmental conditions.
By maintaining open and candid communication with our customers, we build strong relationships and better understand our customers evolving needs. Assisting our customers in meeting governmental power efficiency standards and working with them to design electronics that effectively use electricity is a primary business sustainability objective at ON Semiconductor. The Solutions Engineering Centers (SECs) that the company has established and located close to key customers have played a significant role in enabling this success.
SIA Survey
SIA’s 2008 Environmental Metrics Survey published in June 2009 ranked ON Semiconductor’s Leshan, China assembly factory No. 1 in:
- Water usage per package
- UPW usage per package
- RCRA waste per package
- Total waste per package
Green Building
In 2010, ON Semiconductor Philippines Inc. (ONPI) will build a 287,000 square foot environmentally savvy building. Plans are to pursue certification as a Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED*) building.

Environmental Sustainability
Expand and improve in-house sustainability initiatives to lessen corporate impact on the natural environment.
Commitment
ON Semiconductor is dedicated to the continued expansion and improvement of its worldwide environmental sustainability initiatives with the aim of annually reducing our energy consumption by 5 percent, our water
consumption by 5 percent and our overall carbon footprint by 10 percent.
Conservation
Each of ON Semiconductor’s factories is engaged in multiple sustainability projects aimed at conserving water, electricity and fuel. Our worldwide manufacturing operations have well-established recycling and waste minimization programs in place. Ongoing sustainability programs include reusing rinse water in our fabs, reducing water flow during equipment idle periods, reducing electricity use, reducing chemical use via process optimization, recovering heat from boilers, balancing our air streams and other programs.
During 2008, 230,000 tons of scrap materials from the company’s worldwide manufacturing facilities were processed, sorted, and sold for reuse. The reclamation of these materials recouped more than $30 million in 2008 alone.
Network Optimization
The company’s logistics team - responsible for shipment and delivery of the 30 billion products we annually manufacture and ship - has reduced the in-transit mileage logged by our parts by more than 50 million miles per year – thus reducing the company’s overall carbon footprint. The company’s right-size packaging program has significantly reduced the amount of corrugated carton materials and polyethylene-base materials being used – a reduction of more than 23 tons annually.
Standards
The vast majority of ON Semiconductor’s product portfolio – consisting of more than 180,000 different devices – have been converted to meet industry RoHS standards. All products are available in lead-free (Pb-free) packaging. DFN/QFN package families are available in Halogen-free mold compounds and we are qualifying and converting other packages.

From the Socket to the Pocket™
ON Semiconductor provides energy efficient PFC controllers, ac-dc and dc-dc controllers, regulators, MOSFETs and rectifiers for power supply applications, covering the complete power chain from the ac line to the point of load conversion.
ON Semiconductor’s LED drivers cover a broad range of LED lighting applications in different configurations: from very low voltage for cell phone backlighting to high voltage for street lamps and LED light bulbs.
Meeting Energy Efficiency Regulations
Worldwide regulations target standby power and active mode efficiency. ON Semiconductor works with its customers to provide solutions to meet these standards.
